Weather Safety

WEATHER SAFETY

A rainy day can be refreshing.  However, driving in the rain can be quite dangerous so avoid it if you can.  You may be a very safe driver, driving defensively and obeying all traffic regulations.  But what about the drivers around you?

If you have to drive on a rainy day, keep your trips to a minimum to reduce your chances of being involved in a collision.  Before driving, check traffic reports to see if your route is affected by flooding, traffic collisions or road closures.

Following are some helpful tips for a rainy day.

SAFETY TIPS

·        Increase your following distance and watch for brake lights ahead.
·        Allow for more travel time. You should plan to drive at a slower pace than normal when the roads are wet.
·        Slow down – it takes longer to stop in wet weather.  Plus the faster you drive, the greater the chances of aquaplaning ( loss of traction with the road)
·        Drive slowly through any puddle of uncertain depth.  That way if it's deeper than you thought, you can still back out.
·        Never drive through moving water if you can't see the ground through it – you can be swept right off the road.
·        Drive in the center lanes as water tends to pool in the outside lanes.
·        Switch-on your headlights, it will help you see better on foggy or rainy days and it will help other drivers see you.
·        Give a truck or bus extra distance. Their extra-large tires can create enough spray to block your vision completely. Avoid passing one, but if you must pass, do it as quickly as safety allows.

MAINTENANCE TIPS

·        Before it starts to rain, replace old or brittle wiper blades.  Wiper blades are inexpensive and are very easy to replace.
·        Check the tread depth and inflation of your tires.  Properly maintained tires provide the added traction you will need on wet roads.
·        Consider carrying a portable car starter with you.  That way, if your battery goes dead you can start to do a conventional jump start with cables.

OFFICE SAFETY DURING RAINY WEATHER

SAFETY TIPS

Precautions should be made to prevent incidents and injuries should rain water leaks affect office space.

Herewith are some helpful tips to ensure office safety:

·        Ensure that all electric powers are switched off
·        All exits need to be clutter free and accessible
·        Wet floors need to be dried up as immediate as possible
·        Walking through wet floors should be avoided
·        When climbing or descending on stairs, hold on to the hand rails to avoid slips and falls.

DRIVING SAFELY IN FOG

When confronted with thick fog if possible get off the road. If you can't pull off the road use the following safety measures:

·        SLOW DOWN, most fog related accidents are associated with driving too fast making it impossible to stop in time to avoid a collision
·        Keep a reasonable distance from the car in front of you
·        Make sure you can be seen; turn your headlights on low beam lights. High beams direct light up into the fog making it difficult for you to see, while Low beams direct light down onto the road and help other drivers to see you.
·        Keep an eye on your speedometer and maintain a constant speed
·        Don't use your emergency/hazard flasher when driving in foggy conditions.  Drivers tend drive into them inadvertently.
·        In case of emergencies always pull to the far right side of the road shoulder to stop.
